YouTube Stats 2026: Users, Shorts, Revenue & Trends

YouTube Shorts averages more than 200 billion daily views, and YouTube generated $11.055 billion in advertising revenue in Q2 2026. Together, these YouTube stats show the scale of both its audience activity and its advertising business. Sources: YouTube press statistics and Alphabet Q2 2026 results.

But YouTube's opportunity extends beyond short videos. Podcasts, television viewing, subscriptions, and audiences across age groups all matter when deciding what to create and where to invest. Comment and engagement benchmarks add another perspective: whether that attention is turning into a conversation.

This guide brings together recent YouTube statistics for creators and marketers, with dates and definitions beside the numbers. Use it to understand the platform, build a presentation, or decide which questions to investigate in your own channel analytics.

Research updated September 14, 2026. Figures reflect the periods stated; a 2026 report may contain data collected in 2025.

How many people use YouTube?

YouTube serves billions of viewers, but the sources reviewed for this article don't establish an exact, current worldwide monthly active user count for September 2026. Its official press page describes a monthly logged-in audience in the billions without giving a precise total. Source: YouTube for Press.

A commonly cited figure is 2.53 billion, which DataReportal reports as YouTube's potential advertising audience in January 2025. That's a dated advertising-reach estimate, not a newly disclosed 2026 MAU figure. Source: DataReportal's YouTube statistics.

For a more recent view of relative scale, DataReportal's April 2026 update places YouTube first among the social apps in Similarweb's active-app-user ranking. This is an indexed comparison of app audiences; it doesn't provide an absolute, deduplicated count across every YouTube device. Source: Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update.

Three audience metrics to keep separate

Three distinct YouTube audience metrics: monthly activity, potential advertising reach, and survey adoption within a population.

MetricWhat it describesHow to use it
Monthly active usersUsers meeting a platform's activity definition within a monthAssess platform scale when an official, dated figure is available
Potential advertising reachAn estimate from advertising planning toolsEvaluate the audience a campaign may be able to reach
Survey adoptionThe share of respondents who report using a serviceCompare usage within a defined population

A campaign's actual reach will also depend on its targeting, inventory, budget, and delivery. Avoid treating a planning estimate as a guaranteed audience.

YouTube users by country

The following country snapshots use the same late-2025 period from DataReportal's Digital 2026 reports. They're selected market comparisons, not a complete worldwide ranking.

MarketPotential YouTube advertising reachData periodSource
India500 millionLate 2025Digital 2026 India
United States254 millionLate 2025Digital 2026 United States
Indonesia151 millionLate 2025Digital 2026 Indonesia
Brazil150 millionLate 2025Digital 2026 Brazil

These figures help establish market scale. They don't show how many people will understand your content, need your product, or become customers.

Before expanding into another market, review the language of incoming comments, local customer questions, and whether your offer is available there. A smaller audience with a strong fit can be a more useful starting point than the largest available audience.

YouTube demographics: which age groups use it?

84% of U.S. adults say they ever use YouTube, according to Pew Research Center's 2025 survey. Adoption remains substantial across every adult age group in the study. Source: Pew social media fact sheet.

Among U.S. teens ages 13–17, 92% report using YouTube, based on a separate survey conducted September 25–October 9, 2025. Source: Pew's teen survey topline.

For content planning, start with the viewer's problem and level of knowledge. A beginner's tutorial, a detailed product comparison, and an expert interview can serve different needs even when their audiences overlap in age.

YouTube Shorts statistics and the view-count change

YouTube's official press page reports more than 200 billion Shorts views per day on average. That measures viewing activity, including repeated viewing; it isn't a count of unique daily viewers. Source: YouTube for Press.

Historical comparisons need extra care. On March 31, 2025, YouTube changed Shorts views to count starts and replays without a minimum watch-time requirement. Its Studio Content Manager documentation also records an August 2026 update that counts views when playback begins across Shorts, long-form videos, and live streams, while retaining engaged metrics for revenue and Partner Program eligibility. Source: YouTube's measurement updates.

This means a rising view total can reflect a combination of audience behavior and measurement changes. A chart comparing old and new totals needs to acknowledge that break.

For your own Shorts, assess whether viewers stay, return, or take a useful next step. If a clip attracts attention but leaves the same question unanswered in dozens of comments, that question may be a better basis for the next video than simply repeating the format.

YouTube comment statistics and engagement benchmarks

Comments help answer a question that views alone can't: what did people want to say after watching? Recent research offers useful reference points, provided you keep the samples and formulas separate.

A cross-industry engagement benchmark: 0.21%

Quid's March 2026 report puts median YouTube engagement at 0.21% across its industry sample. Its method divides interactions by follower count and selects 150 companies per industry from its database. The report covers organic and paid posts, rather than a random sample of all creators; the public page doesn't specify the exact collection window or YouTube-only sample size. Source: Quid's 2026 benchmark report.

Use this as a company-account reference, not a universal target or a comments-only rate. An engagement rate calculated using views has a different denominator and can't be compared directly with this figure.

More views can coincide with fewer interactions

Metricool's July 2026 summary reports 75.79% more views per long-form video, while interactions per video fell 3.95%, in its comparison labeled 2025 versus 2026. Its broader YouTube study covers 799,718 videos from 71,177 accounts. The public summary doesn't give precise start and end dates for the comparison, so these are study findings rather than full-year 2026 results. Source: Metricool's YouTube study summary.

The practical implication is to track exposure and response separately. If views rise while comments stay flat, inspect whether the new viewers are asking different questions, whether the video invites a useful response, and whether the audience mix has changed.

Comments per 1,000 views vary with video length

An independent vendor study published by CommentShark on August 30, 2026 reports a median channel-level rate of 2.3 comments per 1,000 views for videos longer than three minutes, versus 0.6 for videos of three minutes or less. Fieldwork ran August 19–22 and focused on mostly English-language channels discovered through search. These are observational sample results; the shorter-video group isn't verified Shorts, and the difference doesn't establish that length causes more comments. Source: The YouTube Comment Report 2026.

This makes video length worth recording in your own comparisons. Also match topic, channel size, and time since publication before deciding that one upload generated a stronger conversation.

How to measure comments and engagement on your own videos

Use explicit formulas so that each number answers a clear question:

MeasureFormulaWhat it helps you compare
Comments per 1,000 viewsComments ÷ views × 1,000Comment activity relative to viewing activity
Public interaction rate by views(Video likes + comments) ÷ views × 100A deliberately limited measure using public interactions
Unanswered question shareReviewed viewer questions without a creator reply ÷ all reviewed viewer questions × 100Questions that may need follow-up

These are suggested operational definitions, not a claim that every benchmark provider uses the same formula. For zero denominators, report the result as unavailable.

For example, 40 comments on 10,000 views equals 4 comments per 1,000 views. This hypothetical result doesn't mean 0.4% of unique viewers commented: viewers can watch repeatedly, and one person can write multiple comments.

Capture counts at the same time and compare videos at a similar age, such as seven days after publication. Specify whether comments include replies and creator responses. If an export is incomplete, label its count as captured comments rather than treating it as the video's total.

YouTube on TV and podcast statistics

TV viewing is a substantial part of YouTube

YouTube's August 2026 Partner Program announcement reports more than one billion hours of viewing on TV each day. This refers to watching YouTube on television screens; it isn't a subscriber count for the separate YouTube TV service. Source: YouTube's August 2026 update.

DataReportal's April 2026 report adds an advertising perspective: 59% of YouTube's ad audience used connected TVs, while 89.7% used mobile phones. The audiences overlap, so these percentages shouldn't be added. The report also flags measurement changes as a likely explanation for part of the reported shift toward TV. Source: DataReportal's connected-TV analysis.

For creators, this is a reason to preview videos on a television. Check whether on-screen labels remain readable, whether speech is clear, and whether the explanation works for someone watching from across a room.

Podcasts reach more than one billion monthly viewers

In May 2026, YouTube reported more than one billion monthly active podcast viewers. It also disclosed that Premium users, including trial users, watched more than 800 million hours of podcasts globally in April 2026. Source: YouTube podcast update.

Those figures cover different populations: the monthly audience concerns podcast viewers overall, while the hours figure concerns Premium users, including trials. Dividing one by the other wouldn't produce a valid average watch time.

An interview or recurring discussion series may be worth testing when your subject benefits from explanation. Give each episode a specific promise, then use audience questions to shape follow-up episodes. The platform's overall podcast scale doesn't tell you the ideal episode length for your channel.

YouTube revenue statistics

Advertising revenue reached $11.055 billion in Q2 2026

Alphabet reported YouTube ad revenue of $11.055 billion in Q2 2026, compared with $9.796 billion in Q2 2025. That's approximately 12.9% year-over-year growth, calculated from the reported figures. Source: Alphabet Q2 2026 results.

The quarterly figure excludes YouTube subscription revenue. It also describes platform revenue rather than what creators received.

Annual ad revenue exceeded $40 billion in 2025

YearYouTube advertising revenue
2023$31.510 billion
2024$36.147 billion
2025$40.367 billion

Source: Alphabet 2025 annual report. Values are converted from reported millions to billions of U.S. dollars.

Advertising revenue increased approximately 11.7% in 2025, calculated as (40.367 ÷ 36.147 − 1) × 100. Underlying figures: Alphabet annual report.

Across advertising and subscriptions combined, YouTube generated more than $60 billion in 2025. This broader total includes subscription activity and shouldn't be labeled advertising revenue. Source: Alphabet full-year results.

These figures establish commercial scale. They can't tell an advertiser what CPM to expect or predict a creator's earnings per thousand views. For those decisions, compare your own results by market, format, and reporting period.

YouTube Premium and creator economy stats

YouTube reported more than 125 million Music and Premium subscribers globally, including trials, in October 2025. Treat this as a dated milestone covering the combined products, rather than a current count of paying Premium-only subscribers. Source: YouTube's music update.

Its January 2026 CEO letter also reported more than $100 billion paid to creators, artists, and media companies over the preceding four years. The same letter cited $55 billion contributed to U.S. GDP and more than 490,000 full-time jobs supported by YouTube's ecosystem in 2024. Source: YouTube CEO letter.

These are different measures of economic activity. The payout total covers several types of recipients over multiple years; it doesn't establish an average creator salary. The GDP and employment figures describe the wider U.S. ecosystem.

When planning a creator business, connect revenue to costs you can measure: research, production, editing, distribution, and community support. Platform growth provides context, but a sustainable publishing schedule still needs to work at the channel level.

What these YouTube stats mean for your content strategy

The figures above suggest several useful experiments. Treat them as hypotheses to test against your audience.

Give each format a clear purpose

Try a Short that answers one narrow question, a longer video that explains the full process, or a discussion episode that explores competing viewpoints. Compare each format against its intended job rather than expecting every upload to produce the same outcome.

For example, a Short introducing a common mistake might lead to a detailed tutorial. Check whether people actually continue to that tutorial and whether it resolves their questions.

Check your active audience alongside subscribers

YouTube Analytics defines a channel's monthly audience as the unique viewers who watched within the previous 28 days. Its Audience tab also offers reports on viewing interests and demographics. Source: YouTube audience analytics documentation.

Review those reports alongside individual video results. A large subscriber total can be useful context, but the people watching now are the ones your next upload needs to serve.

Use comments to find the next useful topic

Compare similar YouTube videos, export available comments, review recurring questions, and plan a useful follow-up video.

Pair your view and interaction counts with a review of what people actually wrote. A high comment count could contain practical questions, repeated reactions, disagreement, or giveaway entries, each calling for a different response.

The CommentGrid YouTube Comment Exporter provides spreadsheet-friendly exports of available public comments, including text, author information, visible publish times, likes, and reported reply counts. Use that file as the starting point for a manual review in Excel or Google Sheets.

  1. Choose comparable videos and record their view counts separately at export time.
  2. Export the available comments, following the YouTube comment export guide.
  3. Add review labels such as question, feature request, objection, appreciation, and giveaway entry. Check duplicates in context before excluding them.
  4. Review promising threads on YouTube. A reply count alone can't show whether the creator answered the question.
  5. Turn recurring questions into a follow-up video, FAQ, or clearer product explanation.

Comment likes are votes on a comment, not likes on the video; keep those fields separate when calculating engagement. The export supports analysis, while the labels and calculations above are work you perform on the exported data. Comments also represent people who chose to respond, so interpret them alongside viewing data.

A useful next-video brief can be simple: "Several viewers could follow the setup, but they couldn't identify which setting to choose. Show that decision with two concrete examples."

Frequently asked questions about YouTube stats

How many users does YouTube have in 2026?

YouTube describes an audience in the billions, but the sources reviewed here don't provide an exact worldwide MAU figure for September 2026. The frequently cited 2.53 billion figure refers to potential ad reach in January 2025. Sources: YouTube and DataReportal.

How many views does YouTube Shorts get per day?

YouTube reports more than 200 billion daily Shorts views on average. Views measure playback activity rather than unique viewers. Source: YouTube press statistics.

How much revenue does YouTube make?

YouTube generated $40.367 billion in advertising revenue in 2025, with revenue from ads and subscriptions together exceeding $60 billion. Q2 2026 advertising revenue reached $11.055 billion. Sources: Alphabet annual report, annual results, and Q2 2026 results.

Which age group is most likely to use YouTube?

Among U.S. adults in Pew's 2025 survey, ages 18–29 had the highest adoption rate at 95%. That's a U.S. survey result, not a global audience-composition statistic. Source: Pew Research Center.

Where can I find stats for my own YouTube channel?

Use YouTube Studio's Analytics section. The Audience tab helps you understand who is watching and includes your monthly audience, which uses a rolling 28-day window. Source: YouTube Help.

What is a good YouTube comment rate?

Start with your own comparable videos. Calculate comments per 1,000 views using a consistent video age and reply-counting rule, then compare within the same format and topic. The sample benchmarks above provide context rather than a universal pass-or-fail target.

Sources and methodology

This article prioritizes YouTube and Alphabet disclosures for platform activity and revenue, Pew Research Center for U.S. survey findings, and DataReportal for advertising-audience estimates and comparative usage research. Sources are linked beside the relevant claims.

Comment and engagement findings come from third-party studies by Quid, Metricool, and CommentShark. They describe the publishers' samples, aren't independently reproduced here, and aren't presented as official YouTube-wide averages. Where a public summary omits collection dates or sample details, that limitation is stated alongside the finding.

Statistics retain their original reporting periods. Undated press-page figures are labeled by the date checked, and historical survey or advertising snapshots aren't presented as September 2026 measurements. Calculated growth rates are identified explicitly. Recommendations are editorial interpretations for readers to test, rather than outcomes established by the cited statistics.
